Abstract

566,541. Liquid meters. ENOCH, A. G., and EVANS, D. J. July 2, 1943, No. 10742. [Class 69 (i)] [Also in Groups VI and XXXVI] Apparatus for ascertaining the rate of flow of milk or other liquid through containers, troughs; &c. comprises an electrolytic cell inserted in the stream at the outlet and connected to a milliammeter or similar device, and an injection nozzle near the inlet arranged to supply a saline solution to the stream, the rate of flow being indicated by the time elapsing between the introduction of the saline solution and the movement of the needle of the milli-ammeter. In Fig. 1, the liquid passes from an inlet a through a container A to an outlet a<1> in which is inserted an electrolytic cell K connected to the ammeter leads M. The saline solution is forced through a nozzle B by air pressure or other means when the cocks b, d<1> are opened. The arrival of the saline solution at the outlet a<1> is indicated by the throw of the needle of the meter M. The cell, Fig. 3, comprises graphite electrodes k<1>, k<2> into which are screwed silver-plated brass rods l<1>, l<2> wired to sockets L<3>, L<4> adapted to fit a standard plug. The rods l<1>, l<2> are screwed through an ebonite or like holder L, and the space l is filled with insulating cement. The whole is supported in a casing K which is inserted into aT-piece J interposed in the outlet pipe a<1>. The cell electrodes are connected in series with the meter, battery, and switch, a depolarizer is connected across the electrodes, and a signal lamp across the battery and switch. The apparatus is particularly designed for use with a pasteurizing plant in which it is necessary that the milk should be maintained at a raised temperature for a certain time.
