Abstract
1,098,077. Measuring fluid-flow electrically. NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN NUCLEAR SCIENCE. Oct. 8, 1964 [Oct. 12, 1963], No. 40342/63. Heading G1N. Apparatus for measuring the rate of flow of liquid through a conduit 2 (Fig. 1) comprises a diode in a probe unit supplied with heat at a constant rate, and a metal probe 4 protruding into the fluid stream, whereby the temperature of the diode is determined by the rate at which heat is carried away by the liquid, and is measured electrically in comparison with a similar but unheated upstream unit, having a similar probe 5 sensitive to the ambient temperature of the fluid. The two probe diodes 8 (Fig. 3) are connected in parallel to a power supply also feeding the heater element 11, and the difference in potential across the diodes is indicated on a meter 12 calibrated in units of fluid-flow. The ambient temperature of the fluid as measured by probe 5 is also indicated on a meter 14, and an alarm 15 is energized when the rate of flow or fluid temperature reaches a predetermined level. The probes 4, 5 may be hollow metal pins, or rectangular blades, or made flush with the inside surface of the meter body 1, for use with fluids containing solids in suspension. The electrical apparatus may be mounted directly on to the meter body 1 Figs. 4 and 6 (not shown). For use with hot fluids the heater 11 may be replaced by a cooling element.
