Abstract
566,143. Preparation of paper pulp. FAJANS, E., HAMILTON, F., NORTH, F., SAMUELS, H., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 19, 1943, No. 2779. [Class 96] The usual beating process in the preparation of pulp for the manufacture of paper from cellulosic half-stuff, is substituted by a mechanical working, as by kneading the fibrous material in not more than five times its weight of water, and in the presence of a water-soluble thickening-agent at a temperature below 100‹ C. Examples of thickening-agents are the sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, water - soluble methyl - ethyl cellulose, gum ghatti, gum senegal, gum tragacanth, starch, sodium alginate, gelatine and carragheen moss. The fibrous material may be mechanically worked with water only prior to adding the thickening-agent. The plastic mass thus obtained is dispersed in water, in the stuff-box, or in a pulping-engine prior to web formation on a paper-making machine. Specifications 341,542, 432,914, 469,391, [Group IV], and 477,763 are referred to.
