Abstract

1424311 Fibrous sheet material BUCKEYE CELLULOSE CORP 16 April 1973 [17 April 1972] 18141/73 Heading D2B A coherent fibrous sheet is made from fibres of a water-swellable cellulose derivative, which is at least partially water-soluble and has a comminution quality of from 0.1 to 30. Comminution quality is determined by a standard test which involves disintegrating a small sheet of the fibrous material in a blender under specified conditions and determining the weight percentage of fibre retained on a screen of specified size. The water-swellable cellulose derivative may be sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose, epichlorohydrin cross-linked cellulose. The sheet may be made by forming a slurry of the fibres in an amount of from 0.5 to 3.0% by wt. in an aqueous organic medium containing 32 to 50% by wt. water, forming a sheet by filtering the slurry, reducing the water content to 0.02 to 0.5 parts by wt. water per part by wt. anhydrous fibre by alcohol displacement washing in from 2 to 5 stages, the amount of alcohol used in each stage being from 10 to 50 parts by wt. per part by wt. fibre, and drying the washed sheet.
