Abstract

566,120. Casting concrete structures in situ. ROBERTSON, A. M. May 11, 1943, No. 7502. [Class 20 (ii)] Buildings of two or more storeys are constructed by first preparing a foundation, or foundation blocks, erecting columns thereon and supporting horizontal shuttering at or near the top thereof, concrete then being poured on the shuttering to form a reinforcedconcrete roof, after which the shuttering is lowered as a unit for the moulding of each of the reinforced-concrete floors in turn. The walls, doors, windows and partitions are finally erected between the floors and between the top floor and roof. The foundations a carry vertical columns b which may be lattice steel box columns for high buildings, but may be of hollow square reinforced concrete for two-storeyed buildings. Prefabricated horizontal shuttering c assembled in sections and slidable vertically on the columns by winches carried thereby, is secured to the top of the columns for the casting of the roof, stiffened channel sections being secured round the columns to key with the roof. The shuttering is then lowered as a unit to the top floor position, secured, and concrete similarly poured to form the top floor, this process being repeated until the ground floor is moulded, after which the shuttering is dismantled. The columns may be employed as conduits for various services, e.g. hot and cold water, gas, electricity, air ducts, heating pipes, telephone cables, bell wires, flues from coal fires and from centralheating plants, sewers and sewer vents, drainage pipes, overflows from w.c.'s &c., laundry shoots, coal lifts and vacuum service cleaning pipes. During construction, pipe-lines for delivering the concrete may be led through the columns. Some or all of the steel columns may be removed after the erection of the building, where strength considerations permit.
