Abstract

565, 873. Determining transition curves for roads &c. MURRAY, F. T. April 27, 1943, No. 6664. [Class 97 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A transition curve for joining a straight or circular part of a track to a further circular part, for example in a railway, tramway or road track or a cam track, is constituted by the envelope of a series of circles, each of which is tangential to a base line and which are struck from a progressive series of centres such that the envelope circles are of decreasing radius as the curve bends away from the base line. Preferably, the radius of each envelope circle is inversely proportional to the length of the transition curve measured from its point of origin or starting point to its point of contact with the envelope circle. In Fig. 3 is shown a plotter for drawing a transition curve joining straight and circular portions of a track. The edge 21 is shaped to the transition curve and the curved member 20 is secured to a base 22 which has an edge 23 parallel to the base line 24. A number of plotters are provided to various scales to afford a selection of transition curves. In using the plotter, the transition curve 21 is fitted so that its base line 24 coincides with the straight portion of the track line and the curved edge runs into the circular portion of the track line.
