[Classes 44 and 89 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A device for testing the response of quickrelease couplings to their release mechanism, such as those used in glider tow ropes, comprises a piston 1 working in a cylinder 2 adapted to be attached to or provided with a part 8 corresponding to one of the elements of the coupling and a counter thrust member 9 adapted to press against the part carrying the release jaws 24 of the coupling when the piston is put under pressure by means such as a hand screw-pump 23, a gauge 18 indicating the pressure applied. Oil or grease is used as the pressure medium which fills a hollow stem 15 and communicates with the working space above the piston through passages 17. The part 8, which may be replaced by elements of other form to suit other types of coupling, is screwed onto a piston-rod 5 passing through a gland 4 in a cylinder head 3. Pressure fluid is introduced through a nipple 20. The release mechanism is actuated while the coupling is loaded by the device and its response noted. A number of similar couplings loaded to the same degree and controlled by a single release device may be tested to determine whether they uncouple simultaneously or not by listening to the resulting clicks as they release. A spring 7 restores the parts to normal position so that the pump pressure is released. According to the Provisional Specification an air cushion may be introduced into the hydraulic system which expands when the coupling is released and increases the loudness of the " click."
