Abstract

564,771. Spraying crops from the air. RIPPER, W. E. April 8, 1943, No. 5637. [Class 6 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] Crop spraying is effected from a helicopter provided with a container for the liquid or dust to be sprayed, a dosage regulator, and means to introduce the material into the downwash of the machine. A dust container 8 encloses an engine-driven agitator 9 ; its base contains holes which may register with holes in a plate rotatable by a lever 15. The hopper contains a false bottom over the agitator 9 to promote uniformity of feed. From the exit duct 16 a fan 17 forwards the material to nozzles &c. which may be mounted on booms projecting beneath the machine across the width of the downwash. Liquids are fed from a tank 36, Fig. 4, by an engine-driven pump 38, the outlet of which is controlled by a needle-valve. The outlet 39 leads to spray nozzles on transverse bars. Instead of the pump 38, an aircompressor may act on the surface of the liquid in the tank ; jets hydraulically or pneumatically actuated may be used for breaking up the liquid.
