Abstract

Hydrogenated rosin or resin acids, or their salts esters are used as binders with fibrous or flaky insulating material, e.g. glass fibre, mineral wool, rock wool, asbestos, mica or slag to form heat-insulating bats, rolls or sheets, &c. The binder may be applied molten, or in solution, e.g. in water, coal-, or petroleum hydrocarbons, esters or ketones, or as an emulsion or suspension as by spraying &c., and may comprise 5 to 25 per cent of the product, which may be used as made or moulded. Hydrogenation of the rosin &c. may be effected in molten form or in solution, to 50 per cent or more of saturation, using as catalyst, platinum, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium, palladium, osmium, nickel, nickel aluminium, nickel-silicon or copper chromite type catalysts, and may be effected before or after esterification, e.g. of wood or gum rosin, abietic, pimaric, sylvic, or sapanic acids.ALSO:Hydrogenated rosin or rosin acids, or their salts or esters are used as binders with fibrous or flaky insulating material, e.g. glass fibre, mineral wool, rock wool, asbestos, mica or slag to form heat-insulating bats, rolls, or sheets, &c.
