Abstract

[Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] Means for transmitting measured torque comprise epicyclic gearing having an element linearly oscillated by a driving member and coupled to a driven member, the reaction of the element with a casing exerting thrust on a piston to produce a fluid pressure affording a measure of the torque being transmitted. The invention is shown applied to a device for driving screws. The drive is applied by a hand lever 2 secured to a spindle 1 having an eccentric portion 3 on which is freely mounted the linearly oscillated element or gear-wheel 4 engaging pins 11 on a driven member 10 concentrically arranged with respect to the spindle 1. The gear 4 is held from rotation, but is allowed to slide, relatively to a normally fixed face-plate 6 by an Oldhams type coupling 5. The face-plate 6 is normally connected to a casing 8 having teeth 8b engaging a rack connected to a piston 23 in a closed fluid-pressure circuit. Rotation of the spindle 1 through the gear-wheel 4 and pins 1 causes rotation at a reduced rate of the driven member 10 and tends to rotate the casing member 8 with a force proportional to the torque being transmitted. This force is measured by the rise in pressure in the fluid pressure system. Ball valves in this system are arranged so that the pressure can be measured for either direction of rotation of the spindle 1. The face-plate is connected to the casing member 8 by plungers 17 held in position by bars 19. This connection can be broken and the hand lever 2 connected directly to the driven member 10 by withdrawing the plungers 17 from engagement with the casing member and moving the bars 19 into a position 19<1> in which they engage recesses 7 in the hand lever 2.. The torque is applied to the screw to be driven by means of a key 20 splined to the driven member 10 and movable axially by means of a rod 21. The lever 2 may be motoroperated and the fluid pressure may be balanced against a reference pressure for operating means to cut off the motor power supply when a predetermined torque is reached.
