[Also in Group XXIX] A toothed wheel or segment 11, Fig. 1, in a rotary plug valve 10 is engaged by a worm 12 which is either moved axially to act as a rack, by an hydraulic or pneumatic piston 15, or is rotated through a splined sleeve 18 by a separate fluid device such as an hydraulic or pneumatic motor 20. As shown in Fig. 1, the piston 15 and motor 20 are automatically supplied alternately with fluid from a reservoir connection 23 by a hand or power-operated gear pump 21 so that the worm is alternately moved axially forward (to rotate wheel 11) and rotated idly back (with wheel 11 stationary) the wheel 11 being thus rotated step-by-step in a direction corresponding to the direction of rotation of the pump input shaft 22. The fluid connections between pump 21, piston 15, motor 20 and a reservoir connection 42 are controlled by a valve 32 linked to a forked lever 43 actuated by a snap-over rocker 35 hava lost-motion connection 38 with the worm-shaft. Safety cut-out switches 28, 29 controlling the pump 21 prevent the development of excessive pressures in its two output conduits. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the fluid connections are controlled by a fluid-operated valve similar to the mechanically-operated valve 32, the worm-shaft then having a lost motion connection with a further valve controlling the fluid-operated valve. In another construction rotation in one or other direction of the input shaft 62, Fig. 3, of a gear pump coupling 61, comprising an input gear 63 engaging two gears mounted in a housing 65 on an output shaft 60 normally causes rotation of the output shaft 60, and hence rotation of the worm 12 to drive the wheel 11. The coupling 61 can, however, also act as a pump having output lines 72 or 73 according to the direction of rotation of its input shaft, a valve 67 connecting the suction side of the pump to a reservoir line 71. If resistance to rotation of the worm 12 is high, the coupling 61 develops a high fluid-pressure which acts through controlvalves 77 and return-valves 79 to move a piston 15 and hence cause axial movement of the worm 12 to rotate the wheel 11, the fluid operation being similar to that causing axial and rotary movement of the nut in Specification 912,759.
