Abstract

1,263,348. Ratchet wrench. J. P. ALBERT. 9 Sept., 1969, No. 44439/69. Heading B3N. An electric ratchet wrench comprises an electric motor 1, Figs. 1 and 3, the casing of which forms a handle, a spring-urged slipping clutch 7 connecting the motor spindle 6 and a drive-shaft 5, and a ratchet wheel 10 for connection to a socket 12, driven in the required direction via a worm and wheel 8, 9, and pawls 13, 14. A further pawl 30 is provided so that the wrench can be manually operated independently of the gear drive. The pressure provided by clutch spring 23 is adjustable by means of a plurality of buttons 26a which are carried in inclined slots 26c and decoupling of the clutch upon overload takes place when shaft 5 and its worm 8 move axially against the pressure of spring 23. In a modification, the drive includes a slipping clutch 40, Fig. 5, and a reversible uni-directional pawl clutch 42. The ratchet drive from motor 1 is through the clutches 40, 42, and a crown-wheel and pinion 48, 44, and the manual drive is through either of the pawls 66, 74. The pawls are selected by a finger slide 92 which engages a lever 84 connected to clutch 42, which in turn is connected to levers 62, 62<SP>1</SP>. A further lever 98 is connected to the motor direction control switch 100. Operation of slide 92 selects the direction of rotation of motor 1, selects the direction of operation of clutch 42, and engages the necessary pawl with the ratchet wheel 50.
