Abstract
A composition useful for impregnating wet material, such as paper, leather, textiles, pigments, lakes and mineral and vegetable matter, is obtained by treating with an inorganic salt a mixture of a cycloaliphatic amine salt of a sulphonated alcohol having at least eight carbonatoms, the corresponding cycloaliphatic amine sulphate and an organic solvent, if necessary, with the addition of water so as to obtain two layers and separating the upper oily layer. The organic solvent may be a paraffin or coal tar fraction, in which case the composition may be used directly for treating the tanned hides or skins &c. The product is also useful for spreading oil on water or wet surfaces. In examples: (1) a mixture containing cyclohexanone or methylcyclohexanol, the cyclohexylamine salt of sulphated lauryl cyclohexylaminesulphate and water is heated with common salt, allowed to settle and the clear oil separated; (2) mixtures containing the cyclohexylamine salts of sulphated oleyl and cetyl alcohols, butyl alcohol and cyclohexylaminesulphate are similarly treated. Pine oil is also mentioned as an organic solvent. The removal of grease and chrome soaps from wet chrome tanned skins may be effected without first drying them by means of the compositions containing paraffin.
