Abstract

An enamel composition containing metallic pigments comprises a drying oil-modified alkyd resin together with a minor proportion, e.g. 1-8 per cent of the weight of the resin of 12-hydroxystearin introduced as a colloidal gel or paste. The 12-hydroxystearin may be obtained by catalytic hydrogenation of castor oil. The colloidal gel may be prepared by adding the 12-hydroxystearin with stirring to a hydrocarbon solution of a linseed/chinawood oil modified alkyd resin heated to below 90-100 DEG F., cooling to precipitate the 12-hydroxystearin in colloidal form, adding petroleum naphtha and grinding in a ball or pebble mill. Examples describe enamels containing: (1), (2) Aluminium flake pigment, iron blue pigment, two mixed oil modified alkyd resins, urea-formaldehyde-monohydric alcohol resin, e.g. as described in Specification 483,399, manganese naphthenate, 12-hydroxystearin and a hydrocarbon solvent. (3) Aluminium flake pigment, titanium dioxide, lamp black, the two alkyd resins, a drier and 12-hydroxystearin and a hydrocarbon solvent. (4) Aluminium flake pigment, a linseed/chinawood oil modified alkyd resin, a urea-formaldehyde-monohydric alcohol resin, a drier, 12-hydroxystearin and a hydrocarbon solvent. The aluminium pigment may be in dry or paste form and may be added as a slurry in the enamel solvent used. It or its equivalent, e.g. bronze should be present in an amount of approximately 3 per cent. The enamels are particularly suitable for application to metallic articles. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited to enamels containing metallic pigments and an example is given of an enamel containing blue lake pigment, the two alkyd resins, an oil soluble phenol-formaldehyde resin varnish, a drier, 12-hydroxystearin and a hydrocarbon solvent. The oil soluble phenolformaldehyde resin varnish is present as a suitable inhibitor. The Specification as open to inspection is also not limited to enamels with an alkyd resin base and contain references to oleo resinous compositions.
