Abstract

An oil-modified polyhydric-alcohol-polybasic acid resin having an acid value of 15 or less is prepared by condensing, in presence of litharge, phthalic anhydride, glycerol which may be replaced in part by ethylene glycol, and 45 to 70 per cent. of linseed, soya bean, wood, perilla or menhaden oil or the acids derived from these oils.ALSO:A vehicle which promotes leafing of flake pigments such as flake aluminium or other metal, graphite, mica and flake sulphide pigments consists of an oil-modified polyhydric alcohol-polybasic acid resin having an acid value of 15 or less and driers dissolved in mineral spirits or other solvent to give a solution having a viscosity of between A and F on the Gardner-Holdt scales. The resins may be formed by condensing in presence of litharge, phthalic anhydride, glycerol which may be replaced in part by ethylene glycol, and 45-70 per cent of linseed, soya bean, china wood, perilla or menhaden oils or the acids derived from these oils. The flake pigment may be first coated with substances such as stearic acid, which enhance the leafing properties. Specification 337,682, [Class 95, Paints &c.], is referred to.
