Abstract
563,798. Coiling. GOSS, T. G., and SMITH, A. S. April 29, 1943, No. 6760. [Class 83 (iv)] A machine for making coiled springs has a gear-wheel with a cam face engaging a pivoted plunger for close coiling a number. of turns during production at predetermined intervals so that finished springs may be obtained after severing the springs midway of the close coils. Subsequent treatment of a spring after coiling is thus avoided. The spring may be fed by driven feed rolls 3, 4 and coiled on a mandrel A<1>. The roll 3 is connected by gearing D to a toothed wheel 1 provided on its face with one or more cams 2 having inclined surfaces 2a to engage an adjustable screw-threaded rod 10 mounted in a spring-pressed lever D<x> carrying a member 13 for guiding the wire to form the close coils, ordinary coiling being effected when the rod 10 engages the plain face of the wheel 1. If desired, the close coils may be formed when the rod 10 is in engagement with the plain surface of the wheel. In another form, Fig. 5, the lever D<x> is replaced by a two-armed lever 15 pivoted to a contact 14 engaging the face of the wheel 1 against which it is pressed by a spring-pressed plunger 17.
