Abstract
920,965. Coiling. K. HACK. Oct. 25, 1961 [Oct. 25, 1960], No. 38141/61. Class 83 (4). Method of making coil springs of the type wound from continuous wire stock and provided with an eye at each end is characterized in that the wound body of a spring is seized by means which move it axially after severance from the wire stock, whilst at the same time the commencing coil of the following spring is wound, the last coil of the wound spring and the said commencing coil of the next following spring being then simultaneously bent over as eyes. Wire 2 is fed by rolls 1 through a guide 3 to coiling tools 4, 4<SP>1</SP> which form the wire into a helical spring 5. After a predetermined number of turns has been wound switch means stops the feed rolls 1 and actuates a knife 8 which cuts the wire from the supply against a mandrel 9. Shortly before the wire is cut jaws 7 close on the spring 5 and, after the wire is cut, they withdraw the spring axially a short distance, the knife 8 returning to its initial position and the rolls 1 starting again to feed wire to wind the first coil 10 of the next spring. The end coils 10 and 11 of the two springs are then pushed down by a pre-bender 12, Fig. 5, towards bending tools 13 which then pivot to bend up the end coils 10, 11 against the member 12, Fig. 6. The jaws 7 are then opened and the spring 5 dropped out. As the tools 12, 13 return to their original position winding of the next spring commences.
