Abstract

The wire (7) is fed through two rollers (3) across the forming mandrel (6), its end striking a strop (5) and curling back on itself to be picked up by the mandrel (6). When the required length is formed, the wire feed is stopped. The cutting and forming unit (12) is advanced towards the spring and a pusher (124) moves the spring between two fixed knives (10, 11). The unit continues moving until the coils are trapped between its cutting edges (121) and those of the fixed knives (101, 111). At the same time, the end loops are formed from the end spirals (122, 123) and a cam operated arm (14, 144) ejects the springs.
