Abstract

577,563. Coiling. RHODES, Ltd., W., and BINCH, A. H. June 3, 1943, No. 8945. [Class 83 (iv)] In a machine for producing cylindrical or flattened helical wire springs suitable for chairs, mattresses, &c. or as ejector springs in small arms magazines, the wire W is fed continuously through tensioning and straightening devices 10 by feed rollers 11, 12 and through a tapered bore 13 in a head 14 towards an anvil 15, which is pivoted at 25 and is moved up and down substantially normally to the direction of feed by cam means 20, 21 so that while the anvil is in the raised position the wire passes it to form the flat part of the helix. The pitch of the helix is produced by an adjustable ramp 16 at the side of the anvil. The grip of the feed rollers may be adjusted by a hand screw 36 acting through rubber discs 37, and the anvil, which may have a renewable grooved bearing block 115, may be adjusted by screws 26, 27.
