563,743. Milling-machines. BOSCOV1TCH, J. June 29, 1943, No. 10454. [Class 83 (iii)] In a method and apparatus for producing shaped articles from sheet material, such as spectacle fronts from a sheet of plastic material 15, the sheet is secured by pointed screws 14a carried by strips 22 removably attached to a jig-plate 10. A pattern 11 of the finished front required is attached to the underside of the plate 10 to co-operate with a fixed stop 19 coaxial with a milling-cutter 20. Bearers 12 support the plate on a table 18 and a packing piece 13 of waste or other soft material is 'placed between the work 15 and the plate 10 to permit the cutter to pass through the work. In operation, with a work piece mounted between the strips 22, the stop 19 is placed inside each of the lens apertures in the pattern in turn and the plate 10 is traversed to cause the cutter to reproduce corresponding apertures in the work by maintaining the pattern and stop in contact. Plugs 16 which exactly fit the apertures are then secured to the packing piece 13 by screws or pins 21 and serve to hold the work on the plate when the strips 22 are removed. The stop 19 may then be engaged with the outer contour of the pattern, as shown in Fig. 2, and the cutter caused to cut out the spectacle front from the sheet 15. The cutter operates by a series of cuts of gradually increasing depth until it has passed completely through the work, and the pattern may be a finished work-piece. The milling cutter may be of the kind described in Specification 563,742.
