Abstract

A grinding wheel &c. is made from abrasive grains of a carbide of silicon, boron, titanium, tungsten, or tantalum, or aluminium oxide, or diamond, with a vitrified borosilicate bond comprising percentages by weight of silica 40 to 70, zirconia and/or titania 2 to 20, alumina 3 to 30, alkaline earth oxide 2 to 15 of which up to 6 may be magnesia, alkali metal oxide 1/2 to 5 of which 0.3 to 3 may be lithia, and boric oxide 5 to 25. Some silica and/or alumina of the bond may be produced from silicon and/or aluminium powders which may oxidize partly or wholly during firing, which may be at Orton cone 12, so as to protect the carbide abrasive from detrimental reaction. A composition specified contains clay, ground flint, artificial colemanite, spodumene ore, zircon silicon and aluminium. Specifications 295,292, [Class 22], and 488,641 are referred to.
