Abstract

Abrasive tools and slabs are made by incorporating diamond dust or fragments in a bonding agent which functions as a secondary abrasive, consisting of a mixture of boron carbide and silicon carbide together with at least one metallic carbide chosen from the carbides of nickel, aluminium, chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, zirconium and titanium. In a preferred method, a mixture of silicon carbide, boron carbide and aluminium oxide is heated in a reducing atmosphere to sintering temperature, thus converting the aluminium oxide to carbide. This mixture is cooled, crushed, graded and then mixed with diamond dust, the bonding agent being present in at least four times the volume of the diamond. This powder is then placed in the lower part of a mould of circular cross-section and a disc-like carrier of a soft metal such as aluminium is placed thereon, the underside of the carrier being fitted with a plurality of keys as described in Specification 559,785, [Group XXIII]. The whole is heated to 800 DEG C. to melt the metal and then allowed to cool in a press at about 1 ton per sq. inch. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of a bond comprising the carbides of iron, or the oxides of boron, silicon or aluminium.
