Abstract

A dense, hard, ceramic article, exhibiting conchoidal fracture under impact, consists of 90 to 99 per cent. alumina 0.6 to 6 per cent silica, and 0.4 to 4 magnesia but without fluxing or bonding agents. The alumina &c., may be wet ground for 10 to 60 hours in a pebble or ball mill until the particles are, e.g., 0.8 to 50 microns in size and are substantially colloidal or mechanically hydrated; it is then filtered, dried at below 600 DEG C. and may be moistened, broken up or shaped as by a pugging mill &c. and fired at 1,200 to 1,600 DEG C. in an oxidizing, inert, or reducing atmosphere to produce articles or grains. The ceramic oxide should be substantially free from oxides of iron, titanium, and silicon as present in bauxite, but may be coloured by compounds of p vanadium, chromium or manganese, and the ground intermediate product may be used as a bonding agent for other ceramics. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 551,421.
