Abstract

563,549. Winding cops. MACKIE & SONS, Ltd., J., and MACKIE. J. P. April 12, 1943, No. 5837. [Class 120 (ii)] In a cop winding machine in which the nose of the cop is formed by one or more conical rollers bearing thereon and in which the spindle rotates and does not move longitudinally, the yarn is tensioned just as it passes to the nose of the cop by being bent sharply around a tensioning bar disposed between the traversing device and the cop. As shown, the cop 20 is formed between a pair of conical rollers 22 and a buttress 23 which is moved by the cop down the spindle 15 as winding progresses, the yarn 21 being traversed by a bar 18 on a reciprocating rod 19 and tensioned by the bar 24 projecting from a guide member 16 on the rail 17 and closely adjacent the nose of the cop ; the guide 16, or a bush therein, may be formed with a conical projection 25 which engages the tip of the cop and prevents the yarn from creeping up over the surface of the spindle or, for the same purpose, the spindle may be formed with a conical projection. The invention may be applied to the machine described in Specification 560,267 and the tensioning bar may be mounted in a slot in the member 16 and adjusted angularly in relation to the cop by screw mechanism. The tensioning bar may be provided with an edge portion of hard metal or alloy or with a tubular hard metal sleeve which may creep around its support to equalize the wear on the sleeve. In a modification, the tensioning bar is disposed parallel to the bar 18 and the yarn may be looped about both bars in various ways ; both bars may be provided with hard metal sleeves.
