ATTACHMENT FOR QUILLING-MACHINES.

To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that we, VVILLLIAM B. LovATT, residing at Veatherly, Carbon county, Pennsylvania; DENNIS A. REHRIG, residing at Mahoning township, Carbon county, Pennsylvania, and PIERCE F. Remus, residing at Lehighton, Carbon county, Pennsylvania, haveinvented a certain new and Improved Attachment for Quilling-Wlachines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an attachment for any style of quilling machine where tension or drag is required for the spooling or quilling of silk, cotton, wool or other material.
Our invention has for its object to provide an attachment which may be placed upon any style of quilling machine and over which the thread is passed in its travel from the bobbins or swifts to the quills or bobbins on the take-up spindles and which can be so adjusted that the desired degree of drag on the thread may be maintained.
Our invention also has for its object to provide means whereby loose ends or waste of thread or broken strands may be gathered and prevented from passing to the quills along with the thread proper.
Our invention also resides in those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts all of which will be first described, thenl be specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in which like letters and numerals of reference indicate like partsin all of the figures, l designates the quilling machine which is provided with the usual brackets 1a and top bar lo. To the brackets 1a are fastened by adjustable clips 3a, standards 3 which have bearings 4 to receive the ends 5a of a roll 5, the bearings-4 being clamped by Specification of Letters Patent.

The roll 5 is covered with 'plush 6, or other suitable material.k Blocks 7 are secured to the roll 5 at desired intervals and the blocks 7 are provided with slots 7a, the slotted surfacesgof the blocks being covered with plush 8, or other suitablev material. The blocks 7 are secured to the rolls 5 by screws 9 or in any other desired manner.
10 represents bobbins which are held either on vertical spindles 11 or in a hori zontal position by supports 12 on a rod la of the quilling frame. From these bobbins 10 the thread 15 is passed around or over adjusting rods 2 of glass or other suitable material, after which the thread is passed over the roll 6 and through one of the slots 7a to the quills or bobbins 10. Instead of taking the thread from bobbins 10 the thread may be taken from a swift 13 supported on the bar 1C or support-s 14, as indicated, or the swifts may b e supported in any other desired way. The rods 2 are carried by clips 2a which are adjustable in the brackets 1l so that they may be shifted along the brackets to bring the thread 15 into greater or less contact with the roll surfaces as conditions m'ay require and thus increase or decrease the drag as desired. The Contact of the thread 15 with the roll surface 6 may be also adjusted or varied by making the roll 5 of oval or other similar cross sectional shape, as shown in Fig. 4, of the drawings, and by turning the roll of Fig. 4 on its aXis a greater or less tension on the thread 15 may be had.
By passing the thread 15 through the slots of the member 7, any loose particles of thread will be prevented from passing through the slot, as shown in Fig. 7, to the quills or bobbins on the take-up spindles of the quilling machines. The thread which passes to the quills will be cleaned, as it were; furthermore, by providing the slotted member 7 for the thread to pass through should the thread consist of more than a single strand of material and one or more of such strands become dropped from the full thread then the slotted member 7 will act as a catcher or preventer and hold or break the thread and therebyl prevent imperfect threads from passing onto the quill, bobbin or spindle.
In Fig. 8 is disclosed a slight modification ot' the invention wherein the block 7 is formed of a resilient spring-like member covered with plush S, or the like, so as te more readily grip the thread l5 to break the thread or hold it tight..
Then we speak of the roll 5 being covered with cplush we desire it understood that any other soft fibrous material may be used in lieu thereof, such for instance as velvet or the like.
'Ve deem it well to call attention to the fact that by the use of this invention quilling machines may be run ata very much greater speed than under the present system of handling material, thereby reducing the cost of production, etc.
Numerous slight changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope ot the appended claims. Y
That we claim is:
l. n attachment for quilling machines comprising a plush covered roll over which the thread passes in its travel from the bobhin to the quill, a plurality of rods extending substantially parallel with said roll and spaced apart over which the thread may be passed to vary the amount of contactbetween the thread and said roll by causing a larg-er or smaller length of said thread to be brought into contact with said roll and a support for said roll and rods.

An attachment tor quilling machines coniprising a rotatably mounted plush covered roll over which the thread passes in its travel from the bobbin to the quill, means for adjusting the length of contact ot the thread with the roll surface, and means carried by said roll through which said thread passes to strip the thread of loose strands and removable means for holding said roll in a given position from rotation and a support for said roll.
4. An attachment for quilling machines comprising a rotatable plush covered roll over which the thread passes from the bobbin to the quill, removable means for clamping and supporting said roll in its adjusted positions, and radially disposed blocks secured to said roll between which rthe thread passes.
5. An attachment for quilling machines comprising a rotatably adjustably mounted plush covered roll over which the thread )asses in its travel from the bobbin to the quill, means carried by said roll through which said thread passes to strip the thread ot1 loose strands, said last named means comprising slotted blocks between which the thread passes, and a support for said roll.

An attachment for quilling machines comprising a rotatably adjustably mounted plush covered roll over which the thread passes in its travel from the bobbin to the quill, means for adjusting the length of contact of the thread with the roll surface, means carried by said roll through which said thread passes to strip the thread of loose strands, said last named means comprising slotted blocks between which the thread passes, and a support for said roll.
7. An attachnient for quilling machines comprising a rotatablyl adjustably mounted plush coveied roll over which the thread passes in' its travel from the bobbin to the quill, means carried by said roll through which said thread passes to strip the thread of loose strands, said last named means comprising plush covered slotted blocks secured to said roll through the Islots of which said thread passes, and a support for said roll.
8. An attachment for quilling machines comprising a rotatably adjustably mounted plush covered roll over which the thread passes iu its travel from the bobbin to the quill, means for adjusting the length of contact of the thread. with the roll surface, means carried by said roll through which said thread passes to strip the thread of loose strands, said last named means comprising plush covered slotted blocks secured to said rolls through the slots of which said thread passes, and a support for said roll.

An attachn'ientI for quilling machines comprising a plush covered roll over which the thread passes in its travel from the bobbin to the quill, a plurality of rods lying in the same plane and spaced apart over which said thread may be passed to vary the amount ot' contact between said thread and said plush covered roll by causing a larger or smaller length ot' said thread to be brought into cont-act with the surface of said roll, and a support for said roll aud rods.
