Abstract

563,104. Locking cycles against theft. WILDRIDGE, H. E. April 19, 1943, No. 6230. [Class 79 (iii)] Means for locking the front wheel of a cycle against rotation comprise a rod 7 carried within the handle-bar stem 1 and controlled. by a lock 6 at its upper end, whereby it may be moved axially, (1) to cause members 14 to grip the wheel rim 16, and (2) to connect the stem 1 and wheel' fork stem 2 against relative rotation, thus preventing the wheelgripping device from being loosened by twisting the stem 1 about the fork stem 2. In the construction shown, the rod is normally pressed down by a spring 19 to open a pair of jaws 14 pivoted at 17 and having a slotted connection with the rod. The rod is raised by means of a crank-pin 6a when a key is inserted in a lock fixed to the stem 1 and turned. The stem 1 is adjustable as usual in the stem 2 of the wheel fork 11 and is secured in any desired position by a clamping ring 3. When the wheel is locked as shown, a coned member 21, adjustable on the rod 7, enters the lower part 1a of the stem 1 and expands it against the stem 2, a cork sleeve 26 being interposed to provide a tight grip. This lower part 1a can rotate relatively to the part 1, but relative axial motion is prevented by a screw in one part engaging a groove in the other; thus the gripping members 14 cannot be released by rotating the handle-bars relatively to the fork, and thereby unscrewing the lower part 9 of the rod from the main part 7. In a modification, applied to a steering head of the kind having a central bolt for adjusting the height of the handle-bars, a pair of rods, one on each side of the central bolt, are used instead of the single central rod 7.
