. Inventorl y vf 'By w Patented June 14,v 1949 UNITEU" STATES 'PATENT OFFICE sm POLE claude A. Leekens, Jr., steamboat springs, com. Application July I, 1946, 'Serial No.'6'80,761` i comms. (c1. aso-11.37)
This invention .relates tonew and useful improvements and structural refinements in ski poles-,1 and the principal obect of the invention is toV provide aA device ofthecharacter hereinl described, whi-ch incorporates' :inV its construction a screw driver blade,. such-asy may be. conveniently .and effectively enripitiyed for eectng minor repairs of the skis, when more adequate facilities are not available.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ski pole which also embodies in its construction a storage compartment, which may be conveniently used for sticks of wax, small tools, and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a ski pole which is simple in construction, pleasing in appearance, and which cannot become easily damaged.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a ski 4pole which will readily lend itself to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical, cross sectional view thereof,
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a modified embodiment of a removable tip used in the invention, and
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the subject shown in Figure 3.
Like characters of reference are used to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention embodies in its construction a ski pole 5, the same being formed from any suitable material, such as a tubular shaft, and being provided adjacent the ground engaging end 6 thereof with the conventional wheel or basket 'I.
The end portion 6 of the pole 5 is provided with an axially extending, screw threaded bore 8. which is adapted to removably receive a screw threaded shank 9 of the ground engaging tip I0.
The latter assumes the form substantially as shown and is flattened at the free end thereof to provide a screw driver blade II. If desired, the tip IIJ may be permanently, or semi-permanently secured in position by means of a transversely extending pin I2, which passes through the shank 9 and through ther-adjacent portieri` of the ski pole.
V Itlwill be noted 'that the screw driver blade maybe effectively .employed for effecting repairs of a minor nature,` when more adequate equipment is not available.
Referring now to the kmodified embodiment of the tip I0 illustrated in the accompanying Figures 3 and 4, this assumes the form of the removable tip or body I3, provided with a knurled lateral wall I4, and with a transversely extending aperture I5.
One end of the body I3 terminates in a pointed extremity IB, this being adapted to engage the ground. The remaining end of the body is enlarged to provide what may be referred to as the nut portion I'I, which in turn, carries a screw threaded shank I8. It will be noted that the free end of this shank terminates in a attened extremity, constituting a screw driver blade I9.
The tip I3 is adapted for removable positioning in a threaded bore, similar to the aforementioned bore 8, such as may be provided, preferably in the second ski pole of a pair. It should be understood that the first pole carries the aforementioned tip Ill.
When the tip I3 is placed in use, it is mounted at the end of a ski pole, in a manner similar to that shown in Figure 1. In the event that the screw driver blade I I on the first ski pole becomes worn or damaged, the screw driver blade I0 may be effectively employed by simply removing the tip I3 from the associated pole, this being accomplished by either applying a suitable wrench to the diametrically opposed flats 2d formed on the nut portion I7, or by inserting a suitable tommy bar in the aperture I5.
Referring now to the upper end, or the handle end of the ski pole, the same is provided with an externally screw threaded portion 2| and with a blind, axial bore 22. This bore constitutes a storage compartment such as may be effectively employed for small tools, sticks of wax, or the like, and it will be noted that the compartment 22 is provided with a lining jacket 23, in order to prevent the contents thereof from rattling.
A removable cap 24, assuming the form of a sleeve open at one end thereof, is adapted to slidably telescope over the end of the pole, as will be clearly apparent from the accompanying drawings. It will be noted that the cap or sleeve 24 is formed with an internally threaded portion;V
25, this engaging the aforementioned portion Z'I The inner end of the bore in the cap 24fiS".
equipped with a suitable insert 2B, the same forming a cover for the aforementioned jacket 23.
A iiexible strap 21 is secured to the outer end of the cap 24, said strap forming a slinging loop with which ski poles are usually provided.
It will be noted that by unscrewing the cap 24 from the pole, the storage compartment will become readily accessible.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention Will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is considered unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a ski pole having a handle portion and an internally threaded socket at one end; a removable ski pole tip comprising an elongated body having an externally threaded shank receivably engaging said socket, said body having a reduced integral extension forming a screw driver blade.
2. In a ski pole having a at end portion and a handle portion, said flat end portion having an internally threaded recess therein; a ski pole tip comprising an elongated body having a flat inner end portion engaging the entire dat end portion of said handle, and a reduced externally threaded shank carried by said bodythreadingly received in said recess, said body having a screw driving extension.
