Description

(54) SUPPORT DEVICE (71) 1, HERBERT JOHANNES VUERHARD, a citizen of the Republic of South Africa, of 33A Prestwich Street, Cape Town, South Africa, do hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a Patent may be granted to me and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a support device.
The present invention involves a support device, which includes a tube having a closed end and an open end for receiving a corresponding tubular member of an object to be supported; a solid shank connected at one end to the closed end of the tube and having an external diameter narrower than the external diameter of the tube; and a soil penetrating part in the form of an auger connected to the end of the solid shank facing away from the tube.
The-device may include a turning handle rod receivable in the tube.
The tube may have a pair of opposite holes provided transversely to its longitudinal axis for receiving the turning handle rod for turning the tube so as to turn the auger into soil.
The turning handle rod may have a resilient cap at one end.
The resilient cap of the turning handle rod, when inserted into the tube may close the open end of the tube.
The device may include a locking member, which comprises an aperture in the tube, an internally threaded block fixed to the tube and being in alignment with the aperture, and a threaded bolt having a turning head engaging in the threaded block for locking an elongated member inserted into the tube in position.
The device may be adapted to support an umbrella, such as a beach or garden umbrella.
The invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings.
In the drawings there is shown in: Figure 1-a side view of the device in accordance with the invention with the turning handle inserted through the holes in the tubular body; and Figure 2-a side view seen along arrow II in Figure 1 but with the turning handle inserted in its rest place in the tubular body.
Referring lo the drawings, the device 10 includes a tubular body 12 which is open at one end 14. At its other end 16 it is welded to a shank 1 8 leading into a soil penetrating part 20 consisting of an auger 22.
The tube is provided with two opposite holes 24 and 26 through which a metal rod 28, having a rubber cap 30 at one end, can be inserted. This rod 28 forms a turning handle.
For use, the handle 28 is inserted through the holes 24 and 26 as shown in Figure 1, and then the tube 12 is rotated so that the auger 22 penetrates into soil down to a sufficient depth. Thereafter the handle 28 is removed from the holes 24 and 26 and the support pipe or rod of an umbrella, or of any other object to be supported, is inserted into the open end 14 into the tube 12.
For storing or transporting the device 10, handle 28 is inserted into the tube 12 and the cap 30 closes off the free end 14 as is shown in Figure 2.
Depending on the strength of the auger 22, the device can be screwed into very hard soil, even tarred roads.
In the bottom of tube 12 at the end 16 a rubber bush 32 may be provided as is shown in Figure 2. The pointed end of an umbrella rod will penetrate through this bush 32 and thus be held still so as not to rotate.
The tube 12 may be provided with a hole at which a nut 34 is fixed so that a locking bolt 36 can turn in it. The bolt 36 has a head 38.
The bolt 36 is turned into the tube 12 for pressing against the end of a rod inserted into the tube 12 for locking such a rod into position.
As is clear from Figures 1 and 2, the shank 18 has an external diameter which is smaller than the external diameter of the tube 12.
