Description
(54) FISHING-ROD HOLDER
(71) I, WALTER MERTEN, a German citizen of Bahnhofstrasse 1, 6632 Saarwellingen/Saar, Germany (Fed. Rep.), do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to a holder for a fishing rod.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a fishing rod holder of simple and compact construction facilitating carrying thereof in a fisherman's tackle.
According to the present invention there is provided a holder for a fishing rod, compris mg: a socket for receiving the handle of the rod, said socket being generally cylindrical and being closed at its base end;
a generally linear supporting post serving as a ground anchor, the lower end of said post being constructed for insertion into the ground;
an arm connected at its inner end to the upper end of said generally linear supporting post and projecting laterally from said post; and
hinge means connecting the outer end of said arm with said base end of said socket, constructed and arranged so that said socket can be adjusted to different angles relative to said arm;
said hinge means including means for selectively locking said hinge means against movement; and
said arm projecting laterally from said generally linear post a sufficient distance and said hinge means being arranged whereby said socket can be pivoted into an inoperative position folded against said post.
The hinge means preferably includes a boss fixed to the base end of said socket, said boss being pivotally mounted on the shank of a locking screw which passes through an opening provided in said outer end of said arm, the threaded end of said locking screw receiving a locking nut. The outer end of said arm may be a fork in which the boss is received and the facing surfaces of the boss and said fork are preferably serrated, said serrations being engageable upon tightening of said locking nut, whereby to lock said hinge means against movement.
Preferably, the distance between the clamping surface of the head of said locking screw and said locking nut fixed in a nonrotary manner to the screw shaft is greater than the axial outer width of the hinge parts, a compression spring being located between the screw head or the nut on the one hand and a part of the hinge means on the other hand, the mating surfaces of said boss and said outer end of said arm being radially serrated, and the spring travel of said compression spring being greater than the height of one of said radial serrations. A similar effect is achieved if the hinge means comprises a reversible ratchet such as is used in some hand tools.
The invention will now be further described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings showing one embodiment of fishing rod holder in accordance with the invention and in which:
Figure 1 is a side view with a section through the receiving cylinder and projecting arm of the spear,
Figure 2 is a view of the fishing-rod holder according to figure 1, from the left and
Figure 3 is a section on line III-III of figure 1.
Figures 1 and 2 show the spear 1 provided with a flattened end la, which spear comprises, at its upper free end, a projecting arm 2 with two resilient fork ends 2a. A receiving cylinder 3 of synthetic material for receiving the handle end of a fishing-rod is pivotally connected to the arm 2, which cylinder has a closed base 3a. In the embodiment, the hinge consists of two resilient fork ends 2a, a boss 4 able to be inserted between the fork ends, which boss is fixed by a toothed shaft end 4a to the base 3a, and a set-screw 5 passing through the boss 4 and fork ends 2a to engage a clamping nut 6 constructed as a butterfly nut.
Figure 1 shows the end face of the boss 4 directed downwards in figure 3, which is provided with radial serrations 4b. In the same manner, the opposite contact surface on the fork end 2a located on the underside in figure 3, is also provided with radial serrations. Inter-engaging radial serrations may naturally be provided on both outer end faces of the boss 4 as well as on both opposing surfaces of the fork ends 2a.
The radial serrations provide positive locking of the relative rotary position between the spear 1 and the receiving cylinder 3, when the clamping nut 6 is tightened. If this nut is loosened by several threads, the receiving cylinder may be tilted with respect to the spear, in which case the teeth of the radial serrations push the resilient fork ends 2a apart. When constructed as a stop nut fixed in a non-rotary manner on the screw shaft, the clamping nut 6 may be welded to the shaft of the set-screw 5 in a position screwed back by several threads. In this case, the distance between the clamping surface of the head 5a of the set-screw 5 and the nut must be greater than the axial outer width of the fork ends 2a, in order that when the receiving cylinder 3 is tilted with respect to the spear 1, these fork ends are able to expand outwards according to the height of one radial serration.
The construction of the arm 2 in the form of a fork is to be recommended for reasons of stability, but the hinge may also consist of the boss 4 adjacent the base and a further non-forked boss adjacent the spear as well as of a set-screw 5 passing through the bosses with a clamping nut 6. Also in this embodiment, by means of the arrangement of radial serrations and a compression spring replacing the resilient properties of the fork ends 2a, for example beneath the nut 6, the same ratchet-like effect can be achieved when adjusting the relative rotary position between the spear 1 and the receiving cylinder 3.
The size of the arm 2 is chosen with respect to the outer diameter of the receiving cylinder 3 such that the receiving cylinder can be tilted out of the position of use shown in figure 1 into an inoperative position folded against the spear, in which the spear and receiving cylinder form a compact unit extending parallel to each other.
