Abstract

562,094. Polishing diamonds. ASQUITH, Ltd., W., BURNESS, T. P.'N., and JOHNSON, A. Sept. 14, 1942, Nos. 12909 and 16421. [Class 60] A mechanical gripping device for engaging the cylindrical rondist portion of a diamond comprises a tubular cylinder terminating in a cone which is slit to form jaws which are engaged by the conical end of a sleeve slidably but non-rotatably mounted on the cylinder, the sleeve being moved endwise by a nut and the diamond resting against an adjustable depth peg. As shown, the diamond H', formed with a cylindrical rondist f, is engaged by the jaws a<2> formed on the end of the cylindrical member A. The jaws are operated by the internally coned end of the sleeve b which is prevented from rotating relatively' to the member A by a peg C engaging in a slotted flange thereon and is moved endwise by a nut E. The peg F is adjusted by a screw G and one'end is plane, as shown, while the other, f<1> has a cavity to take the collette end of the diamond when the table is to be ground, in which case one part of the conical jaws is omitted to enable the diamond to engage the lap, and a pivoted device is provided for holding the diamond during the adjustment of the jaws.
