Abstract
561,515. Sorting cylindrical objects. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., ROWLEY, E. R., and MOSS, A. Sept. 17, 1942, No. 13144. [Class 106 (ii)] A machine for sorting cylindrical objects comprises (1) three right cylinders A, B, C with their axes parallel, so arranged that the gap between A and B is the " go " limit, 'and the gap between B and C the " no go " limit; (2) means for periodically presenting the objects to the gap between A and B, and if they pass that gap, to the gap between B and C ; and (3) projections on at least two of the cylinders, which pass through the said gaps between the presentation of successive objects and carry away an object that has not passed through the gap in that interval. As shown, carbon rods 1 fall from a hopper 4 into grooves 3 of a roller D which drops them periodically into the gap between cylinders A and B rotating in the same direction. Oversize rods are swept away by claws 6 on cylinder B, the others are presented to the gap between cylinders Band C rotating in opposite directions. Undersize rods pass through the gap, while those of correct size are swept away by claws 8. If only one end of a rod passes the first gap it is caught by a plate 7 until picked up by the claw 6. The gaps may be varied according to the desired limits by micrometer screws. The claws may be made larger than the gaps, in which case grooves are cut in the corresponding cylinders. The cylinders may all rotate in the same direction.
