Abstract
561,237. Friction wheels. A. C. E. MACHINERY, Ltd., and EVANS, P. N. June 2, 1942, No. 7473. [Class 80 (i)] A pinion for friction gearing consists of friction material clamped between metallic discs or plates, compressed and subsequently peripherally-hardened by subjecting the periphery to radially exerted pressure. The pinion is constructed from a number of discs a of friction material, e.g. compressed paper, clamped together by plates b of smaller diameter than the discs by means of bolts or screws c. The assembly is then given a preliminary machining to render it cylindrical. It is then mounted.in a machine and rotated at a high speed in contact with a metal disc of nearly the same diameter but rotating in an opposite direction at a slightly higher speed. This metal disc has flats whereby the friction material is lightly hammered or beaten to harden it after which it is turned to size in a lathe. The pinion and plates are bored and one of the plates may have a square aperture e to engage the shaft, or splines or keys may be used.
