Abstract

561,066. Silencers. BLANCHARD, J. G. Oct. 29, 1942, No. 15217. [Class 7 (ii)] In a silencer for pulsating gases and comprising at least one forwardly tapered chamber 6 provided with sector vanes &c. 7 to impart a forward spiral motion to the gases, the chamber being fed through an eccentric opening in its base 5 from a tapered chamber 3, apertures 8 in the base put the chamber 6 into communication with a smoothing chamber 9 surrounding the chamber 3 which directs the impulses towards the forward end of of the tapered chamber 6. The chamber 6 leads eccentrically into a further tapered chamber 12 communicating at its base by apertures 14 with a smoothing chamber 15 surrounding the chamber 6. Perforations 16 in the wall of the chamber 12 permit part of the gases to traverse a surrounding chamber 17 and pass through apertures 20 into an outlet chamber 20<1> into which the chamber 12 delivers concentrically. The silencer may be used in a vertical position, any solid matter caught in the chamber 6 being removed through a door 23 and water may be sprayed on to the inner surface of the chamber through a nozzle 25. Specifications 336,714, [Class 7 (ii)], 420,675 and 426,769 are referred to.
