Abstract
Cellulosic material is bleached by subjecting it to the action of an aqueous solution, at a pH of about 3-9, containing an alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorite and an aldehyde. The process is especially useful for completing the bleaching of material already partially bleached by the customary methods, and is applicable to wood pulp, cotton linters and textile fibres, e.g. of cotton, hemp or regenerated cellulose. Specified chlorites are those of sodium and calcium and specified aldehydes are formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, acetaldehyde, furfural, benzaldehyde, the 5- and 6-carbon atom aldoses and inverted sucrose. In examples: (1) a kraft pulp is suspended for 2 hours in an aqueous solution at 60 DEG C. containing sodium chlorite and formaldehyde and buffered with sodium hydroxide to pH=8, and is separated and washed; (2) and (3) a kraft pulp is suspended for (2) 3 hours, (3) 1 hour, in an aqueous solution at (2) 25 DEG C., (3) 50 DEG C., containing sodium chlorite and formaldehyde and buffered with sodium bicarbonate and monosodium phosphate to pH=(2) 7.1, (3) 6.9, and is separated and washed; (4) a kraft pulp is suspended for 1 hour in an aqueous solution at 50 DEG C. of formaldehyde buffered to pH=7.1, separated, washed, suspended for 1 hour in an aqueous solution at 50 DEG C. containing sodium chlorite and formaldehyde and buffered to pH=7.4, and is separated and washed; (5), (9) and (10) a kraft pulp is suspended for 1 hour in an aqueous solution at 50 DEG C. containing sodium chlorite and (5) acetaldehyde, (9) benzaldehyde, (10) furfural, and buffered to pH=7.1, and is separated and washed; (6), (7) and (8), cotton muslin is kier-boiled, soaked (6) for 1 hour at 75 DEG C., (7) for 2 hours at 20-25 DEG C., (8) for 1 hour at 20-25 DEG C., in an aqueous solution containing sodium chlorite and formaldehyde (6) and (7) unbuffered at an initial pH of 8 to 9, (8) buffered to a pH of 7.0, drained, maintained in a closed vessel (6) for 1 hour at 75 DEG C., (7) for 2 hours at 25 DEG C., (8) for 1 hour at 25 DEG C., washed and ironed dry; (11) a kraft pulp is suspended for 1 hour in an aqueous solution at 56-58 DEG C. containing sodium chlorite and formaldehyde and buffered with mono- and di-sodium phosphates to pH=6.95 to 7.0, and is separated and washed; (12) a kraft pulp is suspended for 2 hours in an aqueous solution at 50 DEG C. containing sodium chlorite and formaldehyde and buffered with sulphuric acid to pH=7, and is separated and washed.
