Abstract

560,912. Grooving wood. WORSCHITZ, F. Oct. 21, 1942, No. 14771. [Classes 145 (i) and 145 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A process for making grooved sheets of wood consists in cutting successive layers from a log or block of wood by means of a knife having a sinuous cutting-edge, so that the fibres retain in the finished sheet their original direction. The sheets may be sliced from a block of wood, but preferably a continuous sheet is turned from a log a, Fig. 1, as in the known method of making veneer. The knife C is formed with a series of grooves 1, 2, Fig. 5, on both sides, and the front portion is bevelled at 3 to form the cutting edge. The knife operates in combination with a counterknife d, Fig. 1, which may be a comb-like structure but preferably consists of a number of rollers 5.
