564,728. Cutting-machines for belts. STEER, G. K. Dec. 30, 1942, Nos. 11640/44 and 17113/44. Divided out of 565,475, [Group VII]. [Class 31 (i)] Damaged belting is cut longitudinally into lengths having straight edges to enable lengths to be joined together at the edges for re-use by traversing the belting past a fixed cutter while subjecting it to tension locally adjacent to the cutter so as to remove the cut edges from frictional contact with the surface of the cutter. The belting B is fed over a roller 79 and is controlled by adjustable side guides 22 adjustable by means of screws 28a. It passes under a guide 116 and is fed past the fixed cutters 112 by means of feed rollers 25, 26. The cutters are mounted in convex members 111 which act to produce the local tension, and the members 111 can be set at selective distances apart in frames 114 formed with notches 115 for receiving correspondingly shaped projections on the members 111. More than two cutting-knives may be used for slitting a belting into two or more separate lengths. The knives may be formed with an inclined face at one side so as to cause the uncut belting to veer towards its side guide.
