Class 145 Spiral members for forming the core of composite panels, doors or the like are made from initial veneer peelings, imperfect veneers or other veneer waste by cutting out strips of the correct length and height by means of a cross cutter 4 and multi-blade saw 12, serrating one of the surfaces by means of a serrated roller 20 and plain roller 21 and then forming the strips into spirals by means of an idle or driven serrated roller 22 and an adjustable deflector plate 24. To prevent variation in the height of the finished strips owing to varying spread of the wood under the pressure of the serrating roller, the veneer may be initially serrated between one or more pairs of serrated and plain rollers 6, 8 before passing to the saw 12. The depth and spacing of the serrations may increase from the beginning to the end of the strips by suitable formation of the serrated rollers. Feed rollers 1, 2 and 13, 14 and guideways 27 are provided and the waste edges of the veneer are removed downwards by a pivoted deflector plate 18 and rollers 19.
