[Class 20 (i)] A union for joining rigid members together whereby the said members are held against unintentional displacement and form an articulated unit which when arranged upright and stayed forms a flexible mast, comprises means for allowing limited free movement in all directions between the members. In one form the ends of the members 4, 5 to be joined are provided with slotted plates 7 having upstanding plugs 9 which fit the ends of the members, and these slotted plates are brought close together with a plate 10 between them. The plate is provided with double lipped projections 11 to which the ends of the guy ropes 16 may be hooked, the lips of the projections passing through the slots 8 in the plates 7 as they are brought together, so that on rotation of the members the plates 7 are loosely locked in contact with the plate 10. A stop pin 13 prevents relative rotation for unlocking. In a modification, Fig. 3, the intervening plate 45 is also slotted so that the slots therein may register with the slots in the end plates of the members 4, 5, to allow passage for the looselipped members 46 attached to the ends of the guy ropes. Relative rotation between the ends of the members and the intervening plate causes loose locking of the joint. In a further modification, Fig. 5, for heavy work the ends of the mast members 51, 52 are received in sockets 50 with a universal joint fitting 54, 55, 56 between the sockets, the ends of the guy ropes 61 being secured to members 59 welded to the pins of the joint.
