[Classes 145 (i) and 145 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A method of preparing wood for glueing consists in subjecting the surface to the scarifying or teasing action of members that move along the surface in the direction of the grain, the speed of the members being regulated to produce a hairy surface on the wood. Preferably the member consists of a stiff wire brush or steel wire carding, or a steel strip with sawlike teeth on one edge may be wound on a roller with the teeth projecting radially outwards. The method may be used in making airscrew blades or other laminated wooden articles particularly when compressed wood is used. The method may be carried out on a machine comprising a table 17, an endless chain conveyer 18 driven by a motor, and a scarifying or teasing roller 13 covered with wire carding. The table and conveyer are mounted in a frame 16 which is pivoted on the spindle of the driving sprocket 19 and can be raised and lowered by cams 23 to adjust the distance between the roller 13 and the table 17. A roller 14, also provided with wire carding, is used to engage and clean the wires of the roller 13. In use, a wooden board,is placed on the table 17 and its leading edge is pushed beneath the roller 13. The wires tease the surface and also propel the board along the table and keep it in contact with a cross-bar 32 in the conveyer, so that the speed of movement of the board relatively to the roller 13 is regulated by the speed of the conveyer.
