Abstract

The red, blue or reddish brown colour of a dyed article, substance or material such as a fabric, yarn or paper, is intensified, refreshed or brightened by treating the article &c., before, during or after dyeing, with a dilute aqueous solution of a compound of which the aqueous solution exhibits a blue fluorescence. Specified compounds are hydroxycoumarins such as umbelliferone and its b -methyl derivative and an aqueous solution containing 0.01 per cent of the compound is, in general, of a sufficient concentration, the solution being, advantageously, made slightly alkaline, e.g. by addition of borax, sodium carbonate or sodium phosphate. The incorporation of the compound in the dyebath enables the same intensity of dyeing to be obtained with a smaller amount of the dyestuff. The use of 0.01 per cent of b -methyl-umbelliferone in the dyebath when dyeing a cotton fabric with Cotton blue B is referred to.
