560,085. Tractor driving - gear. HOWARD, A. C., and ROTARY HOES, Ltd. June 22, 1942, No. 8527. [Class 79 (ii)] A reduction or two-speed gear for application to an existing tractor comprise a driving shaft 9; a sleeve 10 loosely mounted thereon and having a gear member adapted to drive a worm or other wheel 5 on the axle 6, an two-speed or other gearing connecting the shaft 9 and sleeve 10. In the construction shown, the ordinary worm-shaft is removed and replaced by the shaft 9 and sleeve 10 and a casing 11 containing a two-speed gear is bolted to the axle casing 3 in the place of the usual wormshaft cover-plate. A gear 14 is fixed to the sleeve 10 and a gear 12 is splined on the shaft 9. In the position shown in Fig. 3, the drive is transmitted from the shaft 9 to the sleeve 10 at a reduced speed through gears 18, 19 on lay shafts 20, but when the gear 12 is slid out of mesh with the gears 18 and dogs 29 engage dogs 30 on the gear 14, the shaft 9 and sleeve 10 are locked together for a direct drive. The gear 12 is controlled by a hand lever (not shown). A draw-bar connection 8 is provided on the casing 11. The invention may be applied to axles driven by bevel or spur gearing.
