Abstract
559,857. Tension indicators for cables &c. DEHN, F. B. (Sturgess, Inc.). July 11, 1942, No. 9669. [Class 106 (ii)] Relates to the type in which the tensioned cable is deflected between two support points, the force being measured and consists in applying the force through a leaf spring the deflection of which is amplified. One edge of a flattened body 1 housing the indicating mechanism is provided with spaced cable engaging blocks 4 between which is a pressure applying block 5 mounted on a leaf spring 6 and forced outward against the cable by means of a trigger lever 8. Another lever 9 is provided to lock the indicating pointer in the position reached when the pressure block 5 is released. The blocks 4 are mounted on pivot pins 10 and the lower edges are curved with the pivots as centres, the blocks turning towards each other as the cable is deflected. Spring stop and slot means 11, 12, 13 prevent outward swinging of the blocks 4. The leaf spring 6 is secured at one end to a bracket 15 supported on a pivot pin 14 while an arm 21 freely supported on the pin 14 extends along one side of the spring and carries a pin 17 which extends forwardly over the spring to enter freely a hole in the block 5, so that the latter may be readily detached and changed for another suitable for a different cable. A spring 22 normally pulls on the lever 21 as shown. Parallel to the spring 6 and riveted to it at the free end 18 is a lever strip 19 bent downward at its free end and then horizontally at 19' to overlie an adjustable screw contact 20 passing through a screwed socket in a lever 39 pivoted at 39<SP>1</SP>. This is connected via a pivoted link 36, a sector 33, and a pinion 34 to an indicating pointer. The flat face of the sector is normally engaged by a flat spring 41 to hold the indicating mechanism. The brake is released by turning a cam disc 45 by means of the finger piece 9, the cam sliding a pin 42 to move the brake spring 41. The trigger lever 8 pivoted at 24 and carrying a roller 25 serves to deflect the spring 6 the lever 8 being fitted with a snap-action spring device 56, 28.
