Abstract

559,563. Coating surfaces. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Aug. 27, 1942, No. 12096. Convention date, Sept. 2, 1941. [Class 95] [Also in Group XL] The envelope of a discharge lamp or the like is coated with a suspension of finely divided fluorescent material in a carbonaceous binder comprising a minimum of binder solids consistent with effective coating viscosity and is then baked at a relatively low temperature sufficient to carbonize the binder but insufficent to burn out the carbonaceous residue. The luminescent material may be an alkaline earth metal phosphate activated by cerium prepared as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,306,567. The binder may consist of nitrocellulose dissolved in butyl or amyl acetate and diluted if necessary by toluene.
