Abstract
558,757. Volume control. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., CHATTERJEA, P. K., and HOUGHTON, L. W. July 17, 1942, No. 9958. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] An inter-valve coupling for volume control comprises a potentiometer consisting of a constant resistance and a thermistor, or thermally sensitive resistance element, and control is effected by varying the heating current applied to the thermistor. The Figure shows an arrangement using a negative temperature-coefficient thermistor T the heating of which is controlled by an adjustable resistance R2 from a source S and associated with a resistance R1. The resistance R1 and the thermistor T may be interchanged and the latter may have a positive temperature-coefficient. The control is particularly applicable to very high frequencies as the element in the thermistor may be of small dimension, e.g..02 inch in diameter, and may be located in the circuit at the best point for transmission. The control is also convenient in the case of high voltage apparatus, e.g. television, when suitable insulation may be provided by using a transformer with the control element at earth potential.
