558,477. Revolving-cylinder pumps. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. July 3, 1942, No. 9255. Convention date, July 16, 1941. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] A pump of the kind in which a number of pistons 13, 14 reciprocate in cylinders 11, 12 the axes of which are inclined obliquely to one another is constructed so as to have a variable output, and is used in a system for driving a fixed capacity hydraulic motor 75, Fig. 5, for driving an electric alternator at constant speed, a governor 55 being used to vary the pump outlet by controlling a valve 60 which directs operating fluid to one or other of the ends 61, 62 of a cylinder containing pistons connected by a rack 5 7 adapted to adjust the position of a rotary valve 52 for controlling the pump outlet. A similar rotary valve 51 is provided for the cylinder 11. The cylinders 11, 12 are mounted in casings 16, 17, and the cylinder 12 has a splined connection with a driving-shaft which drives the cylinder 11 by means of bevel gears 21, 22. To enable the cylinders 11, 12 to be pre-set at the required angle the cylinder 12 is fitted with an adjustable spring-pressed socket 36 which presses a ball 37 into contact with a centring pin 38 mounted in an adjustable nut 39 in the cylinder 11. The pistons 13, 14 are pivoted together, and they act by suction to draw fluid from an inlet chamber 65 past a spring-controlled valve 71, and the outlet fluid passes via ports 74 in the pistons, and radial ports 76 in the cylinders to central passages 77, radial passages 78 and conduits 79, 80, 82. Between the inlet chamber 65 and the apertured ends of the cylinders 11, 12, are the valves 51, 52, which are provided with arcuate slits 66, and the angular adjustments of the valves by means of the racks 57 referred to above adjusts the pump outlet so that it is sufficient to drive the motor at constant speed. The outlet depends upon the position of each piston in its bore at the time that its bore registers with the valve 51, or 52, and this position is controlled by the racks 57. To use the pump in a constant pressure system the pistons on the rack 57 are pressed at one end by a spring and the cylinders containing them are connected to the outlet of the pumps.
