Abstract
558,098. Reflection-reducing coatings. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. March 16, 1942, Nos. 3453 and 3454. Convention dates, March 1, 1941, and Aug. 13, 1941. [Class 97 (i)] Reflection-reducing layers are formed on glass by treating the surface with the vapour of hydrofluoric acid of low concentration ; the surface residue comprises solid and stable fluorides of some of the metallic constituents of the glass. may have a refractive index approaching the square root of that of the glass &c., and may have an optical thickness approximately one quarter of a particular light wave length, or approximating an odd number of such quarter wave lengths. The treatment may be effected at substantially atmospheric temperature and pressure, and is applied to a glass sheet 13, by acid solution 12 in a container 10 surrounded by water which is circulated through a tray 17 and has a temperature four to ten degrees below atmospheric temperature. The film is stated to be hard and insoluble in various specified acids &c. Specifications 518,119. 537,591, [Group XXIII], 538,272 and 17519/39, (as open to inspection under Sect. 91), are referred to.
