557,871. Coating surfaces; heat treatment of coated articles. IMPERIAL CHEMICALS INDUSTRIES, Ltd., and MATHEWS, A. C. B. July 18, 1941, No. 9092. [Class 95] [Also in Group XI] A process for the heat treatment of articles coated with films of paint, varnish or other coating 'composition for the purpose of drying, stoving or baking, comprises exposing the said articles to intense radiant heat from a source which is at a temperature of not less than 450‹C and not higher than 1200‹C, for a period of not more than 120 seconds, the temperature and period of heating being so chosen that the coating is hardened. The film is thus hardened without deleteriously beating the article as a whole. Specified sources of radiant heat are gas-heated surface combustion units, electrical resistors, and an electrically heated large-area radiating surface disposed within an evacuated quartz bulb, and reflectors may be used in conjunction therewith. Examples are given of the baking of coatings of copal varnish and of synthetic resin varnishes and paints, on metal cylinders and panels, and on copper wire.
