Abstract
A cyclopentadiene modified drying oil varnish resin is reacted with an alpha beta unsaturated ethylenic carboxylic acid in an amount sufficient to increase the acid number of the varnish resin to within the range of 30-125, the said reaction being carried out at a temperature of 220 DEG to 280 DEG C. and the acid reaction product is then neutralized with ammonia or a strongly basic organic amine and incorporated with an organic coupling solvent, miscible with water, in which the product is soluble to form a drying oil varnish composition capable of dilution with water. The cyclopentadiene used to modify the oil may be mixed with dimers, polymers, alkyl homologues and their dimers and other compounds such as styrene; it may be the mixture of such compounds obtained in petroleum refining. The unsaturated acid preferably has from 4-9 carbon atoms in the molecule and may be maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, crotonic, acrylic or sorbic acids, monobutyl maleate, or the corresponding anhydrides. The amine may be a volatile amine if the varnish is to be air-drying or a non-volatile one for baking finishes. The coupling solvent may be a glycol, glycol ether, alcohol, ester, ether, thioalcohol, ketone, polyoxyethylated phenol or rosin acid, or mixtures thereof. The compositions may also contain pigments. Specification 907,782 is referred to.ALSO:Surfaces of wood, metals especially ferrous metals, glass, masonry or plaster board are coated by brushing, dipping, spraying or roller-coating with an aqueous solution of a composition comprising the reaction product of a cyclopentadiene modified drying oil with an unsaturated acid (e.g. maleic acid) neutralized with ammonia or an amine, and a coupling solvent. Pigments, e.g. iron oxide, and dryers may be included. The coatings may air dry or may be baked. Specification 907,782 is referred to.
