Abstract
A polysilicate composition, comprising a mixture of compounds having the formula <FORM:1076309/C3/1> wherein n has a value of from 2 to 10, and at least one R is -B(OH)2, with the remaining R groups being -C2H5, the mixture containing a ratio B:Si of from 1:40 to 3:1, can be made by heating one or more ethyl-polysilicates of the above formula with boric acid in the presence of an organic solvent for the boric acid under substantially anhydrous conditions. Preferably ethylpolysilicate is reacted with orthoboric acid in absolute ethanol at reflux temperature for 3-6 hours. If desired the resulting solution may be diluted with alcohol or glycol monoethyl ether, and pigments, extenders or fillers may be added thereto. An anti-corrosive paint, for protecting steel substrates, comprises 80 to 94 parts (by weight) of particulate Zn dispersed in 6 to 20 parts of the silicate, and optionally colloidal silica or clay. The paints have a good shelf life in the absence of moisture, and rapidly form a hard coating when applied to a substrate.
