Abstract

557,613. Hygrometric apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., RUFF, H. R., and DAVIES, L. J. May 3, 1940, No. 7963. [Class 97 (iii)] [Also in Group XL] In electric hygrometric apparatus in which variation, due to moisture deposit, of the resistance of a normally insulating path between two conductors is indicated, the indicating current alsc controls a heater so that increase of current evaporates the moisture and reduces the current whereby the apparatus is rapidly conditioned tc give a fresh indication. As described the hygroscopic element consisting of conductors 8, 10 is carried by a lamp 6 which also forms the heater, the indication being given by lamp 2 when a gas discharge tube 4 operates. The normal grid and anode A.C. potentials derived from transformer 3 are out of phase so that the tube is non-conducting, but when the hygroscopic element conducts, the grid of the tube becomes positive half cycles of anode potential so that the tube passes current, lights lamp 2 and heats lamp 6 to evaporate the moisture. Lamp 6 may be normally heated to some extent by the provision of resistance 11. The hygroscopic element may also be formed by winding on 3 wires and removing the central one to form the path which by using fine wire may be small enough to be bridged by moisture particles. The arrangement may be preferentially sensitive to moisture drops rather than dew.
